Default Trans or Temp Gauge?

Driving home tonight I noticed my trans temp was up to 220 and went all the way to 250 before I pulled over. I let it cool down for a bit and continued home. It went right back up to 250.

I let the sit for 1 1/2 hours. When I checked it, the temp was around 160. I put my hand on the trans pan and it was warm but easily bearable.

So how often to guages / sending units go bad? This one is like a year old. I didn't notice any funny behavior from the trans.

I have a B&M trans cooler on the rad. Last fall I didn't have a problem. It was around 160 - 180 all the time.

I would put another guage on it to check to see if the guage is bad. Might pull the tranny cooler lines to see if one or both are plugged. I might also pull the tranny pan and filter and inspect for problems. Check the filter to see if there is any metal in it. Could have a torque going bad. Just places to start looking.

Well, I'm sure fairly sure the guage is working properly.

I think my BTO Torque Converter dumped in the bed. This car is like a wild horse that just doesn't want to be ridden.
