Default Engine Cylinder Compression=0

Checked all the cylinders tonight on my engine, 1973 L-82, and all read 150 except #4 which read 0. How do you tell if the piston rings are bad or a valve is bad? The spark plug was dry and not covered in oil, so I figure the rings are good and a valve is bad - right? What other tests should I do to confirm the failure?
At this point I am considering a different set of heads, nothing wild or radical, but something almost stock, but with the 65-67 cc combustion chamber to replace the stock 76cc chamber heads. Any suggestions on different heads, maybe an old set of GM heads? Your opinions are welcomed. Also where might I get the replacement heads?
Roger

wow...just does not make sense to me...0 compression and plug looked fine. Has it been running ok? At 0, you must have something very broken, not worn rings. Pull the valve cover and look for something obvious....like broken rocker or pushrod.

if you put oil in the cylinder and the compression goes up, then it is the rings.

Uhm, Uh, Z-E-R-O, you say? You've got problems that will require a teardown.

Yup, time for a leakdown test. Since it is zero, the most likely culprit is a valve not closing.

To test if it's rings you put 30 wt oil in the cylinder thru the spark plug hole and if the compression goes up during the test, then it is the rings. I assume you pulled all of the plugs and held the throttle wide open for the test....You could have a stuck valve but you would hear a loud "click" when the engine is running. A broken valve spring would result is a rough idle...Good luck!

Could be as simple as a broken valve spring. Hopefully the cause
of low compression hasn't caused any other problems.

Good Luck
