Yesterday I had to replace the pinion seal on the '81. Since the driveshaft and halfshafts were out, I check the condition of them. Couple were a little notchy feeling when moving them around.
I noticed that the front u-joint on the driveshaft was larger than the rear u-joint. The auto part store(s) insisted that they were the same size according to their book. Auto/manual trans. no difference. We matched up the #'s casted in the u-joint to a Brute force joint #203 front and a #103 for the rear.
Has anyone else had this problem or did I just end up with an oddball setup from the factory?

This driveshaft has two different size SPICER u-joints.:Part Nos.
5-790X and 5-785X. (this may be the vendors numbers rather than SPICER's) I go without grease fittings. The larger one goes to the front, or to the transmission end. The caps on both are the same...I believe 1 1/16". good luck, jim
Thanks Jim,
So apparently the 2 different size yokes/u-joints on a '81 driveshaft are from the factory. Weird. Wonder why they did that. Oh well. Cars all back together and ready for a road trip to PA this weekend.

That notchy feeling is call Birnelling. It is like speed bumps that wear into the universal. There is actually notches in the steel and the joint should have been replaced.
