Default Aftermarket cam question

How *big* of a difference would an aftermarket cam make in low end torque/power? I have stock 882 heads, rams horns exhaust manifolds, edelbrock performer intake. 4spd close ratio BW transmission.

NO, im not replacing any of the above items till they break. NO, Im not going to remove engine bore/stroke etc.

Just a simple question about a cam swap and what power gains could be found by this ONE mod (lifters obviously included).

I'd prefer to stay with hydraulic, I'll never see really high RPMs as this is basically a weekend driver car. Which is why Im interested in lower rpm power band.

Thanks for any input.

A cam will certainly help. Something along the lines of an XE268 or similar. But the heads still have those wheezy 76cc chambers. And we won't even talk about compression ratio.

You could do both cam and heads for about 1200 bucks -- perhaps less -- if it's a DIY project.

Yeah, yeah, I know all about the 76cc heads, but the truth is, it runs fine, has pretty decent power etc. I am just curious on what gains can be had from a simple cam/lifter swap, while maintaining vacuum etc. Heck, for all I know I might already have an aftermarket cam in the engine. I know if it does have one it isn't too big cause it idles nice.

I figured some of the gear heads or numbers guys would maybe have a figure or two.

which cam upgrade did you go with?

My neighbor has a "RV cam" in his 69 chevy truck and it runs real strong. Otherwise a very stock 350 engine. From what I've heard, the "RV Cam" is just a term for a cam made to give you low end power. That's the kind of power you can "feel" and probably what i'd want. But I don't know what numbers, duration, lift etc constitute a cam of that description.

I guess I'd need to take my cam to a machine shop to determine it's numbers right?
