Default Trans Confusion, Price difference?!?!

OK, I am a little worried about the ZF6 in my 77 not being set up correctly and with a bad back sometimes shifting is a bit of a pain, literally. S
o I have been tossing around the idea of either converting "back" to an auto (2004r) or just dropping it in favor of something along the lines of a tremec 5 spd which I assumed would be cheaper.

Prices from Bow tie overdrives show there middle of the road 700r4/2004r to be around 1200 bucks (Roughly)

yet the tremecs are over $3000.00

Auto transmissions for as long as I remember were ALWAYS, ALLLWWAAAYYS vastly more expensive than standard transmissions unless you were talking HIGHLY modified race trannys.

What is the deal!?!? Obviously at this point I will be either having the ZF6 checked out or selling it outright and using the money for an auto. because there is NO WAY I can afford that much for a 5 speed.

Is there something I am missing?

There are fewer hard parts that are replaced/upgraded in an automatic. Sun gears, drums and such don't normally wear out so you're looking at the "soft" parts like clutch packs, bands, and thrust washers most of the time.

With a manual, gears, syncros, sliders, bearings, forks and such usually have to be replaced and most of these are very expensive comparatively -replacing one gear in a manual is about the same as the price for a full automatic racing overhaul kit.

In your case, you're talking about what amounts to an overhauled automatic compared to a brand new manual. If you had to buy a new automatic, the price would be more equal.
