Default Fan shroud removal

How painful is it to remove the fan shroud on a 71 sb?
I'm in the middle of upgrading my front suspension and plan to paint the frame this weekend. Most of the frame is exposed with the A arms out, but the shroud blocks some of the access to the frame.

Default PITA? even with the upper arms out?

Did I mention that the upper arms are out?

Does this make the job any easier?

How many bolts hold the thing in there?

It looks doable, but don't want to open Pandoras Box.

thoughts?

My problems was the bolts and arms were still in. The shroud was right up agaist the bolts, and although I could move it, I couldn't get it out. In your situation it shouldn't be near as bad.

do I have to remove the fan before the cowling will come out?

if so, is this a PITA?

how many bolts hold on the cowling?

Mine had a two piece shroud, the ring and then the full shroud. Maybe four screws on the ring, two center bolts and then two or four bolts at the top corners. Then at the bottom you have two posts. You have to bend the shroud past the pins and then push the shroud up.

(on a 79):
fan has to come out, not hard if you have ratcheting-box-end wrenches (no room for a real ratchet)
mine had two bolts on the top, nothing on the bottom
top hose should probably come off too

Easiest way I found was to remove fan, take top rad hose off, remove all but the two bottom (one on each side) rad support bolts from the inside wheel wells, and tip the rad & support forward. Some supports are very tight in there, and this might not work....but it did for me.
Good Luck

That is about the only way possible to do this. And you still have to take great care when you're twisting and contorting the shroud around the upper a-arms to get it out that you do not damage the radiator. BTW my rad support had a nice little surprise for me when I was down there. It's pretty much rusted through and getting a replacement now is difficult.

Without the arms, it shold be a piece of cake. That's what was causing all my problems getting it out. Definitely take the fan off.
