What's the best way to support the engine in order to drop an automatic transmission? I can't support if from above because I'll have it on a kwiklift.
Will a hyd jack with a block of wood under the oil pan work? That doesn't sound too good for the oil pan.
Jack
Put the jack bridge under the oil pan, a bottle jack or other small jack on the bridge, and then you may need to place a block of wood and a towel between the oil pan and the jack. The block of wood will disperse the weight to the oil pan.
I have removed/replace alot of transmission and I use a piece of plywood on the bottom of the pan and a floor jack. This protects the pan and I lower the back of the motor until the distributor is just about hitting. This gives clearance for the upper bolts to be reached with a ratchet.
Never had a problem doing it this way.
56Chevy - Thats a great idea w/ the bridge. I'll do that. I just got this kwiklift and haven't even set it up yet. Its going to be a big first job.
NHVETTE - I'd be happy to host party this time! I ordered a Vigilante torque converter 2800 stall, that should be arriving in a week or so. I'll probably order the 700r4 replacement today or tomorrow.
We'll see if anybody is interested after I get this tranny done.
Jack - I have the Poly E.S. motor mounts. They have never broke without any support under the pan. It just happens sometimes when your lowering the back of the motor to stab the tranny in. The floor jack leaves contact with the pan.
One tool that is a must for any tool box is: The flex plate rotatating handle tool. The arm snags the teeth so you can rotate the flex around to install your TC bolts.
I have also never ran a 700R4 dust cover - It keeps those hot convertors cooler and of course the NHRA tech guy has to see that I'm running current SFI flex plate. Also smart 700 owners cut one or both ears of the tranny front housing. 700's are so wide that they don't clear the header collectors. so you end up screwing around R&R ing the tranny at angle

I have the poly mounts too. I'll probably go with the bottle jack .

Never heard of this, but now is the perfect opportunity to expand my tool list! I've had to turn it over via the balancer bolt. I'll see if I can find one.

So you just run your tc exposed? Wow. Squirrels don't even stand a chance with your buzz saw coming down the road!

Thanks for the help GKull!
Jack - I do alot of my Vette work at home alone. so I don't want to be crawling out from under the car to do things. I bought a second small foor jack. really easy to move around under a car.
The tool to rotate the flex plate is call of course a Flex plate wrench. I have either a Snap on or Mac. they will know what your talking about. It just has a lever handle and a piece that fits into the teeth. so you can rotate it and install the TC nuts.
