BBC Fuel Pump Rod Install ?

Does the fuel pump rod need to be installed with the timing cover off or can it be slid in through the opening the fuel pump bolts into? Is the rod driven by a an excentric on the crank? Already put the cover and dampner back on................................

It can be installed with the timing cover on, through the plug that is underneath the fuel pump.

Fuel pump rod mounts through fuel pump mounting hole, or plugged hole just under pump mount. Grease it up with heavy grease and it may stay in place without having to hold it up. Mine did. Rod is activated by lump on cam. Try to turn over engine so you are on cam low spot to avoid fighting pump arm pressure when trying to bolt pump on.
