Default Differential carrier change necessary?

I've just bought a new ring and pinion for my '70 that I'm in the process of rebuilding. It's a Richmond 3.90 gearset, and I'm a little bit confused... both Summit and Jeg's say that a carrier from a 4.10 is necessary when replacing any (2.41 to 3.70) with a Richmond ring and pinion. Has anyone had any experience with this in the past? Is it a fit-up issue? strength issue? or does it not even matter? Richmond's website has an asterisk only next to the 4.10 gearset, so I question if this is truly necessary...

Thanks, all help and input is appreciated.

Know nothing of Richmond gears, but with stock GM gears, 3.08 up to 3.70 need a "3 series" carrier. 4.11 and up uses a "4 series" carrier.

You can put a 4.11 into a "3" series carrier, but you need a spacer.

Don't know if this helps, but that's the background as to the difference. Chuck

The 3.90 set will fit on a 3 series carrier. The ring gear is thicker so it will fit in the correct way. Someone even makes a 4.11 thick ring gear tha twill fit on a 3 series carrier without a spacer. Do not use a spacer. I'm talking from experience here. Mine blew up. The 3.90 will work fine with no strength issues. Put it in set it up properly and it will live a long time.

richmond 3:90 in my stock 65 housing. the car was sold to me as having the originial 3;73 in there. so it should be a seris 3 carrier.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like new ring and pinion will fit, as the original ratio is 3.36 - that would make it a 3-series carrier.

Where are you Eddiemedium?? I have a brand new GM set of 3.70s that will fit your carrier I would sell very reasonable!

Shipping would be a little $$y if you live in the southern states! but resonable if in northern ones.
