Default Distributor Gear Problem!

My 72 vette tach quit working and the repairman said the distributor gear was broken. Is the gear replaceable or do I need a new distributor? Where should I buy at best deal?

Yes the gears are available to rebuild this. The cross gear is usually the one tha tgoes bad but it will usually take out the dist shaft gear also. Most of the Vette suppliers have these parts. This is a common problem and easily fixed.

Usually when the side gear goes it take the gear on the shaft with it, the shaft gear is part of the shaft which means you must replace the shaft. I have had some experience with reproduction shafts & side gears and most of them are junk.....so in other words THIS is NOT a place to look for the best deal!! ...redvetracr

Where would you suggest that I look for these parts? Thanks!

Here are the various bits-and-pieces. It's hard to know what parts are foreign made these days. I would check with GM first although that may be a longshot. Others may advise on what success they have had with the "usual" Corvette vendors. The unit in the pic came from EBay ($75.00) and simply needed cleaning up and lubrication.

Mine was wiped out. I replaced the shaft and gear from Zip years ago. It has about 6K trouble free miles so far. I don't know if it was US made or made overseas.

I have rebuilt quite a few tach drive distributors and will NOT even buy one that needs a shaft or gear. You might try asking GTR1999 (Gary) as he went through a bunch of parts (and maybe suppliers) before finding usable stuff.

I had the same problem and needed to replace both gears. The tach drive gear was bad, and as I suspected, the main distributor drive shaft gear was stripped also.

I ended up pulling the distibutor, cleaning and rebuiling it with new parts. The parts were bought online through Ecklers.

Excpet the vac advance cannister. I wish I had as much Forum knowledge as I do now to realize that I need to replace this aslo.
