I think it has something to do with spark control.

You mean the plug with the electrical connetor on it? I'm guessing TCS switch. Transmission controlled spark. Pollution doodad.

Yes, it's the TCS switch.

When the car is shifted into 4th gear, the switch is turned on, notifying the TCS relay which is mounted on the left top side of the firewall. The relay turns off the vacuum advance (for emission purposes).

Mine is disconnected. I'm probably polluting the air slightly more, but I didn't want to take the performance hit, however small.

Now Dep!

Lots of people have lots of expensive ways to resize pictures. My way is cheap and works well. Open "Microsoft Paint" and pull the picture in. Choose "Stretch/Skew" from the menu and reduce the size of the picture by 50 or 60%. Then resave under a different filename. You can play with the size by changing the percentages; just keep the changes the same for both dimensions.

Thats wierd... The purpose of the vacuum advance is to improve fuel economy and throttle response when the load on the engine is light or moderate (when cruising). So does that mean the TCS system improves emissions at the expense of fuel economy? Can somebody shed some light on this?

For quick & easy photo-resizing if you run XP just install the Image Resizer PowerToy. You right-click over the pic and choose Resize Pictures. Will default to 640x480 but you can click other resolutions.

You can find the Power Toys here:

You can also resize pictures (more steps involved) using the MS Office Picture Manager. Select "Edit Pictures" then "Resize".

I think that the one thing that is being missed here is that all of the conditions have to be met before the vacuum advance works: the car has to be in fourth gear, the temperature of the engine has to be at normal operating temps and the TCS timer has to worked. If all of those happen then you have normal vacuum.
