M20 4spd rebuild experts....question
I isolated my tranny problem whining noise to the aft tail section where the driveshaft yoke inputs. Sounds like failed bearing. My question is could I remove just the tail piece only to fix it locally or would I still need to pull the whole tranny?

The reverse gear is in the rear housing and there's "dog" that engages the lever. I think you're going to have to pull the tranny. The bearing is in the mid-plate too which you can't get at in the car. The rear housing has a bushing for the tail shaft behind the rear seal. There's special tool to remove the bushing in the car but I've never seen it. If you drop it get a good kit and replace the bearings and gaskets.
