I was just about to purchase a set of ceramic coated FlowTech headers from Summit. I was looking to match them up with Flowmaster mufflers and doing a true dual exhaust. But after reading other threads about extreme noise in the interior.. I'm questioning this setup. I love the sound of the flowmasters (that throaty/tinny sound) on other cars. My brother has a 70 ss chevelle big 454 that sounds awesome! Would another muffler be better for my application?
Depends on which Flowmasters you get. I have the Delta Flow 50s on mine and it is not bad at all. I am running an H pipe also. It will sound different than a Chevelle due to the pipes after the mufflers on the Chevelle.

Yea, I got Dynomax headers with Magnaflow mufflers. It is louder than I wanted inside but not terrible. I still want to quiet it down though. I am going to install Fatmat (double layer in back) and if I have room I am going to put a layer of Frost king on top of that, then my carpet. I am courious to see how well it works.

I'm looking to doing an H pipe also. I will be having a muffler shop make the pipes, as I don't think there is a complete aftermarket header back system with an H.
I just had a new exhaust system installed in my 73 about 3 weeks ago. I had them install Magnaflow mufflers, and yes they are loud when you are accelerating, but once you are cruising it is fairly quiet in the interior of the car. I wanted to retain that muscle car sound.
I put a true dual with flowmaster 40's on my '78 stroker and it sounds great. I do wish I had gone to the super 40's, but it is loud enough as is. There is a little bit of sound reverb in the car at certain RPM, but I kind of like it...

thanks for your input....
So..are the 40's or 50's louder? Also, Which headers do you have? I wish there was a way to hear all the different combinations...
The 40s are louder than the 50s for sure. I have heard many 40s and they were a bit to loud for driving. They are calling every officer around. The 50s are quite loud at 6500 rpm but nice at cruising speed. I have had many compliments on my exhaust system. Some love the 40s and some love the 50s. Exhaust is a matter of personal taste.

I am in the process on installing magnaflows on my '77.

That is my exact exhaust setup:
Flowtech ceramic coated headers
2 1/2" custom exhaust with no crossover
Flowmaster 40's
They are actually not as loud as I thought, not like glasspacks or anything, There is some resonance at low mid rpm cruise but my car is not a daily driver so I always enjoy it.
Here is a sound clip of the flowtech/40's with my 440hp 383 stroker:

Do you have an H pipe installed?
No I don't. I wanted one, but for whatever reason the muffler shop didn't install it. I used to have a bit of resonance inside the car with the old exhaust system, but none with the magnaflows.

The summit brand mufflers outflow the flowmasters but a significant amount. Flowmasters barely outflow oem. I have the data sheet around here somewhere if i can find I will post. oem is something like 285 cfm and summit is 325-45 I think. Dynomax bullets and borla xr-1s' were in the 2600 cfm range.

I've read this before also. I can tell you it is a bunch of random numbers. I'll put a Flowmaster of equal size up against about anything out there and it will produce as much HP as the next. Some of the flow numbers they quote are better than a straight pipe. How can that be. I'm certainly not an ad for Flowmaster but those numbers are false. They gat a bad rap. Some like them some hate them.
I don't know how much difference I would notice between Summit and Flowmasters. I'm just changing from a stock exhaust to true duals with an "H". I think it will be substantial difference in performance no matter which ones i go with. I've always liked the sound of Flowmasters, thats why I asked about them on a vette.
