New problem with a converted system. I replaced the accumulator , had the system vacuumed and charged with 134a. Now, I won't complain about the coolness because I knew that going in it wasn't going to cool as much.
The compressor (an R4) is making ALOT of noise. I've read that the compressor oil is carried with the 134a coolant. So, is it possible that the charge didn't contain enough oil to lube the pistons in the compressor or is this just a case of a 27 year old part going bad. I mean I'm willing to swap out to a new/rebuilt R4 but am I just going to have this problem again with the new one?
After 27 years who knows how many times that A/C system was topped off with R12 and the oil may have gotten low and stayed that way for a long period of time.. And now you did the conversion and the compressor is making noise. I suspect it is time for a new compressor.
Those R4 compressors can be noisy. You should have changed the oil when you did the conversion though. R12 oil is not directly compatible with R134. You should drain it out and put Ester oil in. Ester oil mixes better with the R12 type oil residual instead of fighting it.

Not vibrating and whining noisy, right ?
I had the work on the AC done so I have to assume they drained the old oil and added ester oil. Guess I'll replace the R4 and see what happens.
