Have a dumb question--I was wondering if there is freon substitute out there that is compatible with R-12. I used the last can I had on my brothers Corvette today--thought I had 2 cans. Found some at local auto supply at $45.00 a can. Only need about 1/2 a can to get pressures right. If I can't find a substitute I guess I will evacuate and use some Freeze-12. thanks

Just a thought, but wouldn't 1 can of R12 at $45 be cheaper or close to the same price as 4 cans of freeze 12? (assuming your system needs 3 pounds at 14 oz per can) I also don't think the freeze 12 is DOT approved for automotive use.
To answer your question, there is nothing really proven to add on top of R12, but people have told me they have added Hot Shot and had good luck. Again, hot shot is not DOT approved.

Just get a can and put it in. Also, I have 2 new 30# cylinders of 12 if you are interested in a longer supply.
Here's what I've been using for almost 4 years in my '77--no mods were required. I did have to install a cold control (easy) to keep the evaporator from freezing on cold damp days. I have glass tops and it can make the car unbearably cold on a +95F day. At $221 for a 30# jug--it's much cheaper than R134a now. Not EPA approved for automobile use, but neither is running without cats...
I do follow as many of the guidelines as I can. I do have a reclaiming a nd recycling machine where I work. I have done conversions to 134 and will not use any substitutes that are flammable. In this situation if I go to the Freeze 12 which I have used in various vehicles with great luck I will follow all necesssary procedures.
I can get 4 cans of Freeze-12 for about $32.00 so cost wise it would be cheaper. Thanks for the info.
Good site on A/C.
Mark--you could probably retire when you sell that much freon.

The valves on those 30 lb (DuPont) tanks sometimes leak.... I had a 1/4 full tank and it leaked out all by itself. The valve & packing was as tight as I could make it without snapping the stem off, and I had a plug in it.... but it still leaked.... very slowly.... but it still leaked. Now the tank is a decoration. I would have been better off investing in worm farms.

Didn't buy them to make money, just to have for use. I actually waited a bit too long to buy them. My truck is still R12 and the Vette is too. I also have about 1/2 of a 50# which should last me a long time. I want to sell my 30# cylinders for $500 each. That is only $16/lb-very reasonable.
