Default Smog Pump Removal

I have an '81 that I'm renovating with a 350, is it possible to permanently remove the smog pump and all pertaining hardware? If so, do what do I do with the electrical connections, or can I just abandon them? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Whatever you do, after you remove it DO NOT throw any of the smog components away. I have just priced a smog system for my 68 restoration and the price is $1,800.00. Even though you don't want yours today, sometime in the future you or the next owner may wish to put the car back to original condition and the smog system could be extrememly difficult to find /replace.
My exhaust manifolds are plugged where the air tubes for the smog system entered, but your system is more advanced with electrical connections and I do not have those so can't offer advice on how to deal with that part of the system. I'm sure others will offer advice.
Will you be able to pass emmissions inspection with the system removed?
In my state, the rule is if the car was delivered with such a system , it must be in place to pass the testing requirements.
Good luck with your project,
Kurt

First question is whether your car is required to have the smog equipment in order to pass inspection. Check with the DMV in your state to determine what the law says. IF you remove the smog equipment, hold on to it.

I held on to my smog junk for five years and finally chucked it all.
Sure 'nuff, six months later my state (Texas) passed a retroactive law and now I can't get inspection until next year when my '81 hits the 25-year "exemption" mark.
Flying under the radar until then...

You can just disconnect the smog pump and tee the vacuum line off at the connections there. Mine has been off for years, no check engine light either. You'll also need to cap off the exhaust tubes that come up, I used some rubber hose and metal plugs. Don't leave them open, that could cause problems.
