I have the vapor cannister out to replace the filter. I've searched through other posts about adding charcoal too...but where to I add it? Or is the charcoal sealed in the cannister?
I think it is sealed. Just change the whole thing. My question is why are you doing this at all? Are you having a problem with? I have never heard of these causing any problem at all...in fact you can take the whole thing out all together.
also check this--------the seam on the top lets go after 25 years or so,,re glue lid and its like new--located at drivers side of gas tank,,(fuel vapor seperator)----------
Also look for pinhole leaks...wet spots, even discoloration...the fuel weeps thru a very small hole slow enough that it simply evaporates, leaving nothing more than the smell, and a discolored/wet spot...
Another forum member-Shoptek I think- posted a method for replacing the charcoal granules. Hopefully he will see this post and re-post his method. I want to replace the charcoal in my original canister as well. Good luck.

EXCELLENT MEMORY!!!
I emptied my cannister and then refilled it with activated charcoal from the local pet shop. They use it in fish tank filters. It has to be the finest grind you can get.
It worked fairly well but to be honest, I spent the $50 and bought a new one a few months later.
The charcoal in mine was almost dust, so it came out easily with tapping and slight banging.
Unless 100% originality is a concern, I would replace it. As I recall, 1 of the top vacuum ports activates a rubber diaphram that was also shot.
I was getting a raw gas smell before I added charcoal. It was MUCH improved after I added the charcoal but not perfect. After replacing it...no gas smells!!
Also, one more thing to remember--There is a short rubber hose near the cannister that connects the vapor line from the tank. This rubber hose has a VERY SMALL restrictor device in it, so if you are going to replace the hose, slice the old one down the sides to get out the restrictor. I believe it serves to only allow a small amount of vacuum to pull fumes only--no fuel.

With your Vette seemingly being a 1972 like mine, you may also want to check your fuel filler inlet gasket on the top of the fuel tank. The gasket is made of Cork and will crack and split over time. The gas smell would be the strongest with a full tank and you would smell it especially under hard braking. Good luck on finding it, "I just love old cars!" (Heh! Heh!)
It isn't too bad a job. I removed mine thru the left side egg crate. There are 4 (i think) mounting bolts in the left wheel well that free up the cannister.
