How do I remove the starter?
I know, sounds like a pretty dumb question, but...
I have removed the two bolts that go straight up into the block (NOM) I've removed all the wiring. I can't find anymore bolts and have pushed, pulled, cussed at it and hit it with a rubber mallet. That **** ain't budging. Any ideas?
Did you check if you have that extra strap on the front of the starter? With the 2 bolts out it should have already come loose. Just give it another couple of whacks, it should come loose.
I'll go hit it some more with a BFH tonight. Thanks guys.
For safety, I would install the two front bolts. Leave them loose so if and when it brakes free the starter doesn't hit the floor. This is no different then leaving the nuts on the steering knuckle till the ball joints pops free.
On my 75 (400 small block), in addition to the two long bolts into the block, there is a third bolt that connects to a bracket that goes to the block. it is hard to see from under the car, especially with my headers.
I have a 1979 where I just re-installed the motor after a rebuild. My starter including the two previous mentioned bolts that attach the starter to the block from the bottom of the starter, has a re-enforce mounting bracket that bolts to the block approximately 3.5 inches from the motor mount going toward the back of the engine. This bracket is on the end of the starter where the cable mounting lugs are loacted. This is also the point where there is a frame to engine block ground strap for my car. Also from a previous reply, the starter is heavy.

I drained the coolant from the head, directly above the starter. Yes, the sparks reminded me to disconnect the battery.
I can't find the the bracket with the third bolt. I wonder if I shouldn't be on the short bus somedays. Does anyone by chance have a picture of this piece that I somehow cannot find?
Here is the only pic I could find here at work... ha haa..
Anyway... it is the starter brace that might be in question. It connects to the starter and then to the engine block just below the two center exhaust ports...

If you are having this much trouble with the starter , ( MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE WORKING ON IT ! )
sounds like the start of a BUBBA job to me
Sounds just the opposite to me. He took out all the bolts he could find and then asked for help when it wouldn't budge. Bubba would've beat the hell out of it until something broke. But hey, thanks for the helpful post.

Just because he's having a little trouble getting it loose, it's a BUBBA job?? Please explain! How's a guy supposed to learn if he can't come here and ask questions?
