Default Distributor weights and springs

I have a Mallory HEI distributor. Trying to get the timing set back up. Heres the question With the medium springs connected should the weights come back to a point where they stop? If I grab ahold of both of them I can squeeze them and they will move say about 1/4 inch or more back in to the center of the shaft. Thanks Randy

If you don't get a reply you might try contacting Mallory direct.
Their customer support is pretty good and they have an online question/answer system that works well.

What a coincidence. I just bought a digital timing light to check total timing. I found that my new mallory was not advancing enough. My initial timing needed to be 22 degrees in order to get 36 degrees of total advance, regardless of the RPM. I am playing with the springs and cannot get it to mechanically advance enough. Lighter springs are bringing my advance in sooner, but still not enough advance is happening regardless of the RPM.

Default Mallory distributor and springs

I put it in maybe two months ago brand new. Yes there is a slight film of lube from Mallory. But the springs just dont seem to go back to a solid place I would call a starting place. I would think that the springs would pull the weights back to that point. What do you think???

i'd remove the springs and move the weights to see if you can feel them hanging up,, also look to see if there are burr's or something on them
