I am surprized that nobody here has tried Dave's Small Body HEI's. Dave Ray can rebuild your distributor core and add HEI electronics to your original without any permanant modifications. He puts a curve on it for you too. Click it and see if that would work for you.
The factory setup works great up to almost 5000 RPM and will continue fire the plugs over that but it can drop a few sparks as you go higher. The factory HEI is more than adequate for most people. If you spend a lot of time above 5500 RPM you might want to step up a bit on your ignition. David Vizard did some testing on HEI modules and coils found that the more expensive HP Accell module/coil or the MSD module/coil combinations would fire well at over 9000 RPM. If you can only afford either the coil or the module, just get the module.
is it possible to make an hei distributor work with a mechanical tach?
You can find HEI dsitributors that have a mechanical tach hookup. I don't think it's possible to mod a non-mechanical HEI tach to use mechanical connections. Not really worth the effort involved, if it can be done at all.
