Usually the slip yoke will wear when the trans. bushing wears. it will get oval, you can see it when it gets serious out of round and will cause bad vibration at specific rpm's. The trans bushing will be worn out too.Put calipers on the shaft to see slight wear. I'd look at this as a possible culprit befor suspecting the splines.

any one make a replacement yoke??? when i went to a 700r4 in 2000, i was told to hold on to the yoke, because they are hard to come by, mine is worn and doesn't seal well with the tranny seal.
Thanks 69 thats the information I was looking for,I never thought about measureing the smooth side I was focused on the splines, also is there a way to tell which end of the drive shaft is which it looks like you could turn it end for end and it would work ?

I just went to a 2004r and found a lot of the yokes have been discontinued. I ended up having to replace the u-joint to fit what yokes are still being made, so hold on to all the old stuff, it might be worth something in the near future.
If I understand your question right, The Trans end of the driveshaft fits the ujoint into two piece yoke in a c3 vette. Thats because you cant drop the drive shaft from the pinion end in a c3. Also, When the shaft gets balanced, the direction of the installed shaft has to remain the same. Yeah, I understand your concerns, That part of the power train is the source of a lot of confusion when trouble shooting vibrations in a C3. Your not alone, thats for sure!

So how do I know which end is correct I've reinstalled like I removed it but with a vibration already there I'm thinking was the previous as concerned with orientation as I was
You may be close, start over, and do all the easy, inexpensive stuff first. You already know the symptoms, RPM's , under load, ect.
That narrows the field already.
If you dont know what the previous did Re do it for a start. I mean drop the drive shaft have it re balanced , maybe thats all it was? if not move on. Ill tell you how to check that yoke. Get under there, put your shoulder on the shaft up close to the trans. and rock it up and down there will be a "little" movement thats normal. then rotate the shaft 45deg ,get your shoulder on it and rock, if the yoke is worn, youll come to a point where that drive shaft is flopping instead of moving a little. You cant miss it, its that obvious. If you dont, that yoke is good and so is the trans. bushing.
Hope that helps narrow it down.
Youll get it solved eventually, Hope its the inexpensive way..ha.

PS..before thinking about maybe manually shifting the trans or diff. read that other post thats going on(trans and driveshaft alignment) that may save you from doing redundant work.

Ok I've reblanced the shaft ,but he didn't do it with the yoke connected said it was close and he "finetuned it" It's back in the car with new joints I have some lite play in the yoke so I'm going with "it's all good" I am watching that other post. Thanks for your insight you've been very helpfull
