Default 5 Spd/6 Spd Question

1982 Corvette
350 CID
700 R4 Transmission

Has anyone ever used one of these transmissions? I would really like to put the 6 Spd in, but I was told that a 6 Spd would not fit in an 82 vette. I don’t know if they were talking about all 6spds, or if it was the current one for this year. I would also like to know the quality of the tranny if anyone has used them. If these are not good, any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA,
CDM

I'm sure you will get more posts on this but will start. From what I have heard the Richmond transmission, it is one of the best. It will fit your car but you will probably have to rework the tunnel a little. Be sure to pick the correct tranny. Some of them have one-to-one final ratios and others have .76 to 1 ratios. If you are wanting it for overdrive use the .76 to 1 is the one you want. Hope this gets you started There are other trannys out there that will do the same thing. Keisler 5 and 6 speed trannys bolt in without modification and are overdrive units.

I run a tko in an 82 ,,,, the 700 and tko are the same length installed . The modification to the crossmember is very simple and involves lengthening the mount perch . Of course you must do the pedals etc but all in all no biggie .

Who told you they would not fit? I would talk to a tech at Richmond or Kiesler. I have a Richmond 5-speed. It's tight but it's in.

I installed the Rich. 6sp(ROD) trans 2 years ago and documented all the details as it went along. The Fit is GREAT, The crossmember must be made removable thats all, well worth it to get an Overdrive gear.
Here is the url if youd like to see how The ROD installs in a C3. www.weavermill.com/trans/richmond.htm

Hello 82 Powerhouse -

The Keisler 5 Speed would be your best bet because:
1. It bolts right in with NO modifications or fabrication

2. It really is a complete kit, so you don't have to waste your time chasing down parts, waiting for stuff to be delivered, finding out you have the wrong part, putting your project on hold while trying to the right part ...etc

It comes with a brand new customized TKO, new driveshaft, speedo cable and gear, reverse light wiring, X member bracket, mount, pilot bearing and all the nuts and bolts to install it! Keisler also has everything to convert from an auto to a manual including BRAND SPANK'N NEW ALLOY 621 STYLE BELLHOUSINGS and an optional hydraulic clutch setup so you don't have to fool with linkage.

3. You know it will all fit, and it comes with a warranty

4. The tranny is very strong and has a real overdrive.

5. You'd be hard pressed to buy a ROD and then buy or build all of the other parts needed to install it for less $, and even then you still wouldn't have as nice a tranny, the overdrive would not be as good and you'd have spent alot of your own time.

I would go with either the Keisler 5 or 6 speed. They are both Tremecs and are top quality. I have a Tremec T56 in my 1970 and absolutely love it. .5 to 1 second overdrive turning 1500 RPM at 70MPH. And when I swap in the 4.33's it will be 75 at 2000RPM.

I installed the ROD 6 speed in my 69. Without question the best mod I ever made! As was said earlier, make crossmember removable. I strongly argued against this in the beginning; but, life was much easier after making center section of the crossmember a bolt in. Drive shaft needed to be shortened too.

The Longs shifter that comes with the tranny is first rate. I went with the .80 or .82 at the suggestion of Richmond because it was stronger when used behind my L88 big block.

82 powerhouse...The ROD 6sp does fit GREAT in a C3 corvette! Ive been down this road already. My 2cents worth is dont compromise till your sure you cant make a trans with an Overdrive gear fit. Look for documentation with pictures before commiting to any aftermarket trans.
I couldnt find one vendor for any of the possible 6sp transmission upgrades that would bonify the install in a C3 Vette. I did find a bunch of guys on the forums that were installing either ROD's or T-56's, Both had their own difficulties. In fact chuck Harmon was one the guys posting results That I checked out a few years ago before I committedto the ROD.(Hope you dont mind me dropping your name in my post Chuck).
I Dont know anyone who wasnt extremely happy with the results regardless of the problems encountered, Me most of all...
Again this is merely my 2 centavos worth with pics included.

Not to mention that Robert and everyone at Keisler are great to work with! I just installed the 5 speed .68 in my 80! Great service and the man that shares the Keisler name is just as great! Thanks!

Personally, I'd go with the keisler 5 speed. I've heard nothing but great things about it and they even have representation on these very boards.

If you're on a budget and not making too much horsepower, a WC T5 is a good way to go. Almost a bolt in, just had to make a dogleg on the shifter so it comes out in the stock position. .68 OD is nice. Usually less than $400 for the whole conversion.
