Default Headers & Plug Wires?

What do you guys use to protect the plug wires from the header?
Son-in-law picked up a beautiful '78 Silver Anniversary with Hedman headers, and one of the plug wires on the passenger side was bad from resting against the header. On the temporary replacement we just draped and tie wrapped the wire on one of the "hi-bolts" holding the valve cover. I'm interested in a permenant solution.
Is this just a routing issue?

Routing issue. Take a look in my pics.

I just replaced my wires (due to some corroded terminals) with an Accel Super Stock 8mm cut-to-fit set. Took me about 40 minutes to do all eight and since they are the exact length needed, they fit great.

That looks good Steve....where do you get the blue brackets?
And do they come in various colors?

Those are just some Moroso wire separators that I got at a local store. They are the Morsoso Super loom kit. The store just had blue but they do come in red, yellow, or blue.

Am I screwed if I want center-bolted mounted wire looms that don't look like fekkin' telephone poles up above the valve covers? All the really pretty stuff is for perimeter bolt covers ...

jegs and summit have many different wire looms. i went with the same ones that Steveg used. got them for $10. Steves pic is very good. i think we both ran the rear wire on each side Under the header and around the block. another thing that may help is custom fit wires. i was able to route them so that none of them touch the headers or each other.

couple of pics in gallery but not ideal for wire looms.

If the plug wires are really close to the headers no matter how you route them, as they are with my setup, get a 2nd set of boots and cover the wire behind the boot with them. My plug boots are less than 1/4" from the header on a couple of cylinders, even with shorty plugs, and slightly dimpling the header tube. I was always burning the plug wire right behind the boot until I tried this solution.

I've got the same problem. I'm running Hedman shorty headers and it's almost impossible to route the wires without touching some of them to the header. The wires are 8mm MSD's with the big fat plug-end connectors, which doesn't help.

I've heard that you can buy fiberglass sleeves to go around the wires that do a good job of protecting them from the heat.

You have plenty of options with the "smaller" diameter wires. If however you run the Taylor 10mm ThunderVolt wires like me, you have to improvise a little. And at a hundred bucks a set you'll want to make sure you get it right the first time. Mine look nice as they are and you have a lot more options than I did so just look around and remember you may have to fabricate something to your liking. Sometimes that's the best thing anyway.

TallGirl-there are a lot of options for the centerbolt covers. I had even entertained the idea of modifying my valve covers to accept the centerbolt accessories.

Those look sweet , where did you get them? I would like a set like that if they would fit 10mm wires.

I bought the billet looms from Summitt, I believe they were around $60.00

Sorry but 10mm wires wouldn't have a snowball's chance in Hades of fitting in those looms , those are 8mm MSD spiral cores in mine and they fit just right in the grooves.

The looms originally routed the #1 and #3 wires around the front of the headers, but I didn't have the clearance for that with the AC compressor so I cut them down and routed them around the back of the front tubes. It works fine with the seperators to hold the wires together and away from the tubes.

Thanks for the info. I bought a cheap set from autozone to kind of get an idea of how they would look/work. Mine are routed nicely now (read not on the headers) but I haven't been able to find a loom to fit them. Oh well another little fab project in the near future. Thanks for saving me the hassle of ordering something that wouldn't work
