I want to add some new wheels to my Corvette, but I only want to use them on the weekend trips to the drag strip. I plan to use the original Corvette alloys for all my street driving.
My question is can I use the Weld Pro Stars
And can these be easily mounted without using any spacers. I really want to go with something about 4 inches wide up front and no more than 8 inches wide in the rear. Back there will be stock back spacing of 4 inches.
If this cannot be done without spacers, is there another nice wheel for my C3 than I can get in 4 inch and 8 inch widths?
panchop,
I'm not questioning you or anything, but what makes you say the wheels won't fit? The sizes aren't stated (other than the back-space) so I'm curious to know why you say they won't fit.
since this is posted in the C3 section i am assumming he has a C3. I am in the process of backhalfing my 75. i had been hoping to use the originial calipers and disk with my new Weld Prostar wheels.Trying to save SOME money somewhere on this project.
you can see the gouges where the calipers hit the inside of the wheel on my 3.5 inch rimsand that was bolted on very loosely.
sure they have a very shallow backspace but it's not the backspace that is causing it. if you look at my 14 inch wide wheels you will see that it looks the same where the wheel actually bolts to the hub.
so it's not the backspace that causes the problem. if you look at a corvette specific wheel from the period like the ones i took off the are made with a spacer to clear the calipers.
thats why i said what i did.
off course someone willl now come on with the evidence to prove me wrong but ...

with panchop:
Just for sheits-and-grins, I tried mocking-up the 15" x 8" Pro Stars off my Z28 onto my old '80, and the rear wheels won't turn without the inside of the wheels (spokes?) being gouged by the capilers
So is there another nice wheel that would work easily on my '79? Looks like those Pro Stars could work with a small spacer, just not sure if I wanna drag race with any spacers in there. Does anyone do that?
I have 1/4" spacers on mine (front and back) and run ConvoPro's without any trouble.
Panchop I appreciate the info, I'm getting ready to rebuild my rear end suspension and wanted to make sure if I changed anything from what I have now it won't screw me later on.
I'll see if I can get some pics of my setup, but it depends on my brand new camera cooperating .

Oliver does just make sure you buy the nice bullit one that dont move and not the cheap mister gasket junk.
I'll have to take acloser look at mine but the back spacer appeared to be bolted to the hub. I don't know if the rotor/hub assembly was drilled and tapped for this or if there were existing threaded holes already in place. I'm not sure about backspace on mine either as they came with the car. Right now it has Hoosier ET quick times that are 275/50/15. I just bought a set of 275/60/15's so when I go to get them mounted I'll try and get some measurements and pics. The other thing is be careful putting just the rim on without the tire. May sound silly but remeber the sidewall of the tire sticks out past the rim. If I didn't have spacers in the back my tire would be a little to close ro the bottom shock mount as seen below.
