I have one side Hooker headers up and simi attached. They went up easier from beneath, but I seem to have a problem right where the pipes come under the body.
the pipe touches the paint and fender, and I'm sure that can't be good, see photo. I appears that I would have to trim some of the body, and I'm not talking about what is under the trim rail. Any thoughts, have I done something wrong.
Good Picture, Yes thats the place on the rocker cover that needs to be trimmed, it should be noted in your instructions too, to let you know this is normal. Youll probably find the same clearance problem on the Passenger side too. Just scribe it, drop the header and trim the scribe mark with a small cutting tool. Clean it up with sandpaper if the trim is a little jagged. You wont ever notice that you had to trim to fit.
Cheers..
Tom
I looked at your photos, Beautiful car. Are those special fender flares?
If they are, I think you will be dealing with more than the normal rocker panel trimming to install hooker sidemounts. Hopefully someone who knows the best way to deal with it will chime in.
Mine cleared the fender flare just fine. Just had to trim under the rocker molding a little.
Questions:
- Are the headers tight to the block?
- Are the tubes installed and tight to the frame? This will change your alignment.
- How are your motor mounts?
Having to cut the body above the rocker just 'aint right...I would send them back and let them try again. I'd be curious to know how the other side fits.....
Those flares are standard for '70. It appears that the pipes are too high. It would take only a fraction of a degree off at the exhaust flange to result in an inch or so misalignment by the time the pipes got to this area. I'd look at bending, shimming, or returning the headers to get them to make a small correction before I'd cut *any* of the flare area. (That said, it's OK to cut the portion behind the rocker panel trim strip since this is non-structural and hidden. I'll be doing it in a week or so.)
