OK Ive got a question . . . Is there anything unique with vettes cooling systems that causes the upper radiator hose to remain hard after the thermostat opens?? Im trying to get the car to run cooler, replaced the stat with a 160 ( I know . . I know it should be a 180 so please dont repond with the GET THAT OUT OF THERE!) The gauge goes to 210 and the upper hose is still hard?? Other than the possibility of having a bad stat or sending unit reading the wrong temp is there anything I should be aware of??
My upper rad hose is always hard. The entire system is under about 15 pounds of pressure. How could the upper hose not be hard if a closed system is pressurized???
The 160 thermostat doesn't control the upper temperature, it just opens at a lower temperature but the maximum temperature will still equalize where it wants to.
I do find that running without a thermostat causes the motor to run slightly cooler at the upper range.
Well this is my first vette so it seems there are in fact differences in teh cooling system. On all my other old muscle cars or regular drivers that Ive had, the upper hose would get soft when the stat opened then would build pressure again . . . this was always a good way of checking to make sure the stat opened when you were testing the system after making some mods. So this is normal then right?
