Ok well my saga continues, got the new trans (3rd) in the car last night and fired it up. That is when I here a ticking noise that sounds like it is in the area beetween the top of the header and the oil pan near the collector. With it being late, dark, and being extremely discouraged I didn't want to deal with it.
When I start cold and trying to get it to idle it goes away during up and down of the rpm cycles, and if the car is stumbling at 500 rpm or so the tick is gone. When at any steady rpm I can hear it.
Someone please have good news for me that I probably just need new header and collector gaskets. I bought the motor used with 10k documented on the rebuild, and heard it ran in the other car before it was taken out.
i had a nissan pu that started making a knocking noise. i lived with it for a long time and wrote it off as an older car noise. this was a KNOCK! like someone smacking the blick with a hammer, not a tick like like tapping it with a screwdriver.
this was my daily driver car. i was spending all my time and money on a project truck and neglecting my other cars maintenance needs
I FINALLY checked the oil on my little nissan. none on the stick. i freaked... filled her up with oil and the knock went away.

I wound up getting some Stage 8 locking header bolts and some good gaskets. No leaks since they have been installed. I used to get a little leak about every 200 or so miles of cruising.
Eddie, did you get these locally? I just got the motor and trans back in. Me and Dad had to remove one of the headers and it didn't look like it was sealing good.
On a side note, can't someone design a header bolt that is not a PIA to put in?? I bout the ones that are allen heads inside, and regualar bolts outside, still took forevor.

Bill,
Got mine from Summit. You might be able to get them from Performance Products in Knoxville.
had the same thing happen on my C3 and it got way way way louder after a farily hard pull... i was about to die. went to the store bought a set and installed bolth on the driver side bank... started it up still a tick... remember to tightin the 2 bolts in the front... start er up... life is good!!!
If it's a rod knocking, it won't last too long. There are a lot more exhaust leaks that rod bearings, so the odds are in your favor. I think if you ever haerd a bearing go, you would know the difference. Bearing make a different noise, kind of a sick, $$, noise.
Yes a loose plug can! Friend of mine was told by a garage he needed new lifters and rocker arms, 1800 dollars later when he got the truck back guess what . . . loose spark plug!!
