The stock system has worked for over 30 years while changing the points once in a while. Now I bought a PROTORQUE 5323OS HI-TORQUE starter to cure that hot starter problem I have, but now I find that this new starter has only on wire for the ignition. The partsman at Murray's Auto supply, say that the starters come that way cause folks don't uses points anymore thus you don't get the "R" terminal.
What is the most reliable converstion kit to change a 1971 454 stingray from points to electronic ignition without replacing the distributor?
The "R" terminal is not used with an electronic ignition conversion so you would not need the wire at all. It is really optional even with the points. You might not even notice the difference in starting and that is the only time it comes into play.
Yup, I bought an identical model off of on the forum members (I think his handle is "jackson") for less than $200 new. Best of both worlds. Reliability of HEI, AND I get to keep my mechanical tach drive.
