Default Points to Electronic Conversion HELP!

The stock system has worked for over 30 years while changing the points once in a while. Now I bought a PROTORQUE 5323OS HI-TORQUE starter to cure that hot starter problem I have, but now I find that this new starter has only on wire for the ignition. The partsman at Murray's Auto supply, say that the starters come that way cause folks don't uses points anymore thus you don't get the "R" terminal.
What is the most reliable converstion kit to change a 1971 454 stingray from points to electronic ignition without replacing the distributor?

Your parts guy is trying to make you think what he has in stock is the only option out there.

I recently ordered a Powermaster starter, which *wasn't* supposed to come with an R terminal on the solenoid... but guess what I got.

I believe the Powermaster starter was P/N 9000. Then again, it was Summit Racing so it could have been a mis-labeled part.

Crane makes what appears to be a nice unit with a built in rev limiter for about $65, Crane XR-I:

I do like the LOOKS of the CRANE CAMS points replacement Ignition Unit.
Does anyone out there have experience with these products?
Thanks to all that have tried to help. It's been a while since I drove my Stingray and I am having withdrawal symptoms.

I have used Pertronix for over 20 years now. The price on the Crane with a rev limiter seems to good to be true. No expirience with the Crane system but, expirience with the multi-strike Crane amplifier. I don't like MSD or Crane, I run Accell 300+ ignition boxes based on VERY BAD! expiriences with both MSD and Crane systems.

You are likely to get mixed replies from this forum about the Pertronix unit. There are some here who have had great success with it, and others who will swear it is a product of the devil himself.

I have been using the Pertronix Ignitor II and Flamethrower coil for about 3 years now with no trouble whatsoever. When I first installed it I had a very worn original L48 in the car and the Pertronix really helped the throttle response on that engine, but in all fairness the points that I took out of it may not have been adjusted properly to begin with.
When I built my new 383 I just used the same distributor (and ignition unit). Still works great!

Well I have had little problem with the point based system. I don't drive the Stingray but a few hundred miles a year since I have had another car as a beater.
I change the points in the Stingray every few years and it is as reliable as an urn. My feeling is if it isn't broke, don't fix it. My problem was with the starter not wanting to crank over the motor after warming up.
I BEGINING TO THINK THE STARTER is going back in exchange for one called the protorque 5323R that has the "R" terminal.

I had a 1970 NOVA SS 350 4SP back in 1975. I BOUGHT new Accell yellow jacket plugs, plug wires, and a dual point distributor. ALL WORE OUT OR malfunctioned AFTER 2000 MILES! Go figure.
Glad I didn't throw away my stock parts.
It seems the farther from stock you get, the more broken parts you have.

I've been using the Breakerless-SE system that Lectric Limitied sells for about a year now, no problems.

It does appear to be a superior design. It looks interesting, though at $159.00 it is double the price of the competition. That begins to lead into HEI DISTRIBUTOR WITH TACH DRIVE type territory.
Thanks for the tip.

The LL setup is the best one out there.. Reason why.... It's a one wire setup, with all the rest if it blows the module you call a tow truck. With the LL setup just keep the set of points that you removed and put them in the glove box.. If something ever happens you can put the points back in within minutes.. The other setups require more than just puttin the points back in...

Just get a relay if you want to keep the points. Make it so the yellow wire gets 12v while the purple wire is energised starting the car.

I've had both the pertronix and the Crane. I had the Pertronix installed and it was trouble free for about 5 years. Then suddenly the car started to cut out and backfire. I changed it over to the Crane unit which I've had for about a year now with no problems. Overall the Crane is easier to install and you don't have to pull the distributor.

If you were happy with the points stay with them and change the starter.
I was forced to change from points to a pertroix ignitor and hated it. That plastic round rig wouldnt sit flat with only two mount points. It needs three or four. Plugs would get wet very quickly. Dumping the pertroix was the best move I did. That Crane unit looks better though. I run a Vertex magneto with tach drive now and have no problems.

I just received my XRi unit last week. For the rev limit, how do you know it works? I mean, does the car stop pulling?? What exactly happens?
