What I heard is that when the 7-blade fan free-wheels, it actually blocks the airflow. Didn't L-82's have a flap or something built into the shroud to keep this from happeneing?
not sure about that flapper door on the L-82s.. i have the indy spoiler on mine too.. i think it helps with cooling as well as helps to stick the nose of the car down as well at speeds...
At 70 MPH, shouldn't there be enough air flow through the rad to make the fan superfluous?
That is what I understand also. I am thinking that I will richen the jets up one or two sizes on my carb when I get home in a few weeks and back to my car! Right now it is a stock Edelbrock #1902 carb and I am told that they are calibrated very lean out of the box. It is the possibility of a lean condition that could explain my similar symptoms - car gets hotter as I cruise down the highway. I put on a new NAPA HD thermal clutch a couple years ago and still had the heating problem on the road - temps would get up to nearly 240 at 70mph w/ no a/c running. I will see what happens and post results on the forum. Thanks for your data point however! Maybe I'll buy a Carquest part if I get no joy... I have had my radiator serviced and I have all the Dr Rebuild "heat relief" foam rubber in place - no air leaks past the radiator.
DO you think it pays to replace the fan clutch for 50 bux or so or go 40 bux for a flex fan? Just how noisy are those flex fans? I'm grasping at straws here because I dont know exactly why it runs hot on the hiway. I hate to just keep throwing money around but the 220 temps on the hiway concern me. Since everything elsi is brand new, water pump, 4 row rad, hi0flow thermostat etc I'm willing to try anything. If the clutch or flex fan doesnt do it than maybe the pace car spoiler.

Im curious about this too. My 76 has same symptoms. I'll replace the radiator eventually, but I also suspect the clutch. The flex fans are pretty noisey in 1st gear. My brother had one on his 68 Chevelle LT-1 conversion. Sounded GOOD if you ask me. Kind of like a gear drive - sort of.
You guys mention a thermal clutch - this is opposed to what other kind of clutch?
Somebody else on the forum said you can feel or hear the fan clutch engage on the interstate, I'll have to say, I've never heard mine kick in so Im sure mine isn't working properly.
