Default Problems during XRi electronic conversion

I was installing the Crane XRi conversion kit tonight and had to pull the distributor in order to run the wires through the grommet After I dropped the dist. back in the block, I noticed that I can rotate the rotor by hand with dist fully seated. In other words, the rotor moves independent of gear. Does that sound right??

Also, the instructions were not so clear, but do I need to remove the wire from dist to the negative terminal on coil?

Thanks in advance

I say NO!
Pull the dizzy again and look at the roll pin which holds on the gear. Find out why the rotor moves.

Hold on, how much does the rotor move? if it only moves a certain angle (about 18 degrees) and then springs back then that is your mechanical advance. If it continues to rotate or holds the position you move it to then the dizzy needs work.

The rotor spins because the distributor is not seated into the oil pump. Pull it and look at the end, there is a bar across the diameter which fits a slot in the oil pump. Sometimes you have to fiddle with it, maybe even use a long screw driver and preset the oil pump to set the distributor in.

Here's where it gets sticky, if you're not careful you won't reset in correct firing orientation. Look in the tech help section. Lars has an excellent paper with pics on how to do this right.

The rotor can rotate 360 degrees....and I am pretty sure it's seated all the way down with pin engaging the pump.

I am going to pull it out again and see if I can hold the gear and rotate the rotor...

Just pulled the dist out, the rotor does spin all the way around while I hold the gear with the other hand.

The roll pin is there...what could be causing this??

Pop the roll pin and disassemble the dizzy. It should become obvious where the rotor button is spinning from. The weld at the top of the shaft may be broken, the shaft itself is kaput.

That’s what it was. It’s all welded up now.

BTW, thanks Alex for spotting that broken weld....

Right now I am stuck baby-sitting for the rest of the day....Tomorrow I will assemble everything back together
