Default Power steering leak - the pump itself?!?

Anyone ever see the power steering pump itself leak? That's what it looks like is happening on my car. Fluid is dripping down from where the pump is, but the lines and where they connect are dry.

Could it be coming from behind the pulley, or can the cap be bad?

Thanks,

Corky

Not sure but depending on the specific model pump, there may be a drain plug bolt somewhere, probably on the back of the pump... I experienced a leak here on an aftermarket unit.

good luck

I have learned that if it has fluid it can leak.

there must be a reason to replace the drive shaft seal and I assume because it can leak. Much more can be found at www.corvettefaq.com

I bought a pump at checker and its the exact same pump. I think it was 70 dollars. I kept the original too instead of taking their weak core $$$.

Just fixed this on mine. Its an easy job and cheap too. If you pull the pump out you will see that the reservoir is actually a can which fits over the cast pump with a big O ring to seal it at the front. Mine leaked there and where the fitting and bolts stick through the can. A $15 kit from one of the catalog houses will give you all the seals for the whole pump. I just changed the reservoir seals. I left it overnight and it still leaked on the bench. I wanted to drive the car so I put it back anyway. Once it warmed up it sealed right up and has not leaked since.

I agree. Try the reservoir seals first. Also be careful when you tighten the pump up. Don't use the filler as a lever. It's very thin metal and easily cracked.

This drawing shows all of the areas that have seals to keep oil from leaking from the pump and reservoir.

http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/P-PumpLeakPoints.doc

There could be corrosion and/or metal fatigue issues with a 35+ year old pump as well.

Most pump rebuild kits should include a lip seal as well as o-rings for all of the described areas.
