Ok I just bought a 76 with a crate 350. Thing runs like a dog. I figure I have some vacuume leaks or something on the car. I tried to set the timeing on the car on Sunday and can't find the timeing mark. We bumpped the motor over till we could see it and pul some white paint on the line. Fired the motor up and started looking for the mark. Nothing.. Moved the Dist about an inch or so each way and it never showed up. I know's it's an after market HB. Is there a way that it could have been put on 180 out?
I think he got the HB from either Ecklers or Mid-America.
I am going to have to do it but sound it looks like.
I've got a similar issue but I think that my HB has slipped. Rather than moving the distributor, you can move the pickup from wire to wire. Doesn't solve the problem but at least you can find the mark.
I don't think that the HB can be mounted 180 degrees out. Hopefully someone knowledgable will chime in but I think that A) there is a key and B) there are three bolts holding it in place. Unless they left the key out, I don't think that you can bolt it n out of phase.

The balancer has either slipped (common problem) or the wrong balancer has been installed. It's not possible to install the balancer incorrectly.
Just do a TDC verification and scribe a new line on the balancer at the correct TDC location. Set the timing off the new line and set it up for 36 degrees total. Inspect the balancer rubber ring to see if there is any indication that the outer ring has slipped or moved (it will usually shift inward or outward when it slips). If the ring has not slipped, you can run with your new scribe mark for timing.
You can get a TDC tool from Jeg's or you can make one yourself. Drop me an e-mail for my paper on this if you need specific instructions: V8FastCars@msn.com

The 350 in the 68 chevy truck I built had the incorrect HB also. The timing line was straight up, and the timing tab was off to the side. I think that means it was pre-68 HB for a 327 or something. I always idled it up to about 1500 or 2000 rpm and adjusted till smooth. however, after following LARs advice on total of 36* at 3000 RPM is what I do now on the vette, of course the HB lines up nicely with the timing tab.
