Long time admirer, first time owner here. I recently purchased an original '68 427/390. (82Kish miles). The LH mirror was a bit loose, so I pulled it off and ordered a new mounting kit. Before I break out the tools, I want to make sure I'm not going to cause any bigger issues. Are the screw mounts biting into anything on the other side of the body? I'd hate to unscrew the mirror mount and hear a fateful tinkling of a nut falling down inside my door.
Is it the same thing for the luggage rack mounts as well? (It would be a pain to wax the rear without removing it first.)
you will find that the replacement mirror will rock front to back a little its the hole where the screw goes through just put a piece of black tape throgh the hole push mirror down on and scure the screw should fix it
I think the nuts for the luggage rack are those plastic rings that expand when the screw goes into them. The rack sits on them. Should stay in place when you remove the rack. I took mine off a long time ago so kinda forgot.
There SHOULD be a tapping plate on the inside of the door moulded/glued just take your time.
I had to repair this on my '68. I was doing a body restore and the glass that the plate bonded to broke, I don't remember why maybe I forced it apart. Anyway there is a small plate back there, be carefull because the bolts have a tendency to freeze due to rust.
