Transmission Guys Please Help!!!!
How technical is it to replace the rear out put shaft on a 700R-4???.
I called a trans company, and they want $145.00 to replace the shaft,
just labor, I already have the shaft. I was thinking about just removing
the pump and then the clutches, and see whats behind that.
Looks like just a c-type clip holds it in???? I not scared to go into it, but the vavle body, I wont dare mess with
As long as you have a clean place to work, I'd say go for it. I was deathly afraid of my TH-400 until I read a good book on transmissions and tackled the rebuild. A lot less intimidating once you know how things go together. The blow-up diagrams are your friend.
It's a matter of time and convenience, I'd say. I'm assuming the transmission's not in the car? Get that sucker up on the bench and do some wrenchin!
Not sure how similar the TH-400 and 700-R4 are, but I'd assume they use at least vaguely similar assemblies.
Ditto on having a VERY clean workplace. I've only had a 700-R4 apart once, but it wasn't rocket science. It's just a huge PITA to keep everything as clean as possible while reassembling.
Tell tell you what, those HUGE C clamps they have on the benches to clamp the tranny case with while you drop in the various parts are a HUGE help in that when the splined clutch packs are fed in from up top, not trying to jiggle and tiggle from the horizontal position....they still are a temper/time wasting bitch to get right, maybe an experienced guy doing this tschit all day long can get in first/second try, but us guys doing maybe 1 ever two years or so....another story...
but it CAN be done, just need hold the tranny up vertically, I put my 700 in a drywall bucket to hold the tailshaft and lean it up on the bench...gotta keep the shaft off the ground....
it protrudes a bit out of the tail housing....
this is true of most automatics...
why the interest in the tail shaft?? far as I have read it's ot a commom failure item....far as I know....or do I have to add yet another part to the list....
I've rebuilt me th350 and ditto the above comments. mrV, I think I just stood mine up on a block of wood! I soon found myself rebuilding again due to the stuff that came out of the new-to-me convertor... Always flush!

That is still happing I am still gathering parts for that. pic's
are going to follow with every move.
This is one of my other projects, I need to install a short shaft in the rear of the 700.
I just don't want to pull the pan or the valve body . Hopefully
I can just pull the pump and basket, and everything behind it to get
to the clip. more advise would be great

HUMMM...AFAIK, I think there is only ONE shaft/housing length available for the 700, those differant lentths were a 350-400 thing, never heard of shorter options for the 700....

You have my curiosity too. AFAIK there is only 4wd and 2wd outputshafts and 1 case length. There are a few different tailhousings, but they are all about the same length. Wassup?

well, I did not want the mods to close this thread because it's not vette related, but here is a pic with a vette, you'll know what it's for when you see the TRUCK..
