Default Bad rear end?

I have my car on jack stands, It looks like the half shafts have slid out of the rear end a little, I can see shiny silver. Also, when I turned the rear wheel, the driveshaft did not turn.

Is the car in gear? 1 wheel will turn without the other (posi clutch pack slippage)...normal

If you are able to turn the wheel without the driveshaft moving (car must be in gear) the other wheel must be able to turn in the opposite direction… if you were able to do this without mechanical assistance (breaker bar?) your posi is also shot… sorry again.

Good luck…GUSTO

I pushed the clutch in to move it, wouldn't move otherwise, but wouldn't the driveshaft turn with the clutch in?

.. The Chevrolet specification for posi-traction clutch pack preload/break-away is 45 lb/ft. Most guys can rotate 45lb/ft!....anything close to this is acceptable...old units will be less to some extent....

You have to measure the end play in the yokes to know where you are.If you can see the yokes slide out of the rear end 1/8" or more they're trash. If you have .040" or under I wouldn't bother with them yet unless you want to rip it apart. A stock spring loaded posi in new shape will require a bit of torque (40-70 ft/lbs)to spin against the locked opposite wheel. Of course a custom tuned unit has no resistance and you could easily spin one against the other by hand and they will lock up straight.
You have to take a good look at what you have then let us know what you find. Look over the bushings, strut rods for being bent, seals leaking, etc
Good luck,

Gary
