News came back from the hospital, My tranny's fried.
I was going to have a convertion on this sexy beast to manual next summer, while i was in basic, but this has pushed this to a winter job.
Now the surgeon says i can use the "muntz" or "munchie" (forgive me, my loud music distorts my hearing) which will be a 4speed. Or spend the extra dough for a Tremec 5spd.
The question is this, would spending the extra cash on a tremec be worth it? I don't plan on heavily modding the engine, just a cruiser, true duals and side pipes. But in case i do change my mind, will it be worth the money? Or in either case, will it stand up to beating of a couple years? I'm 18 and planning on keeping this car for life. Ultimate women catcher, can't let one of the aces fall out of my hand.
ps. is there any other options? ( i want to get a manual, its against my policy to keep it auto, i'll go autostick but thats teh bottom line)
If cost is a concern and you're not putting out more than 350 horses, and not planning on drag racing or speed shifting, you can't beat a T5 (preferably a WC) for cost and ease of installation. I've installed 3 on 3 different cars and haven't had one go out on me yet.
Sounds like your a perfect match for Artillery with those ears. J/k
You're going to need some donor parts from an '81. If your a lifer with the car, then go with a 5 speed of one sort or another. It will depend on your budget and willingness to chop. That extra shift will make all the difference if your headed down to Benning or Bragg from ???. Which branch did you choose? Most of your automatic options will ultimately create a decent hole-shot machine, but won't have the OD options or cruising characteristics.
One think to think about. You have an 82 so isn't the rear gear ratio very high? if so with a 5 speed the overdrive 5th may create a very low rpm on the highway. Were talking maybe 1200 rpm at 55 mph. Now if you have the money change the rear to 3.55 which will give you great acceleration and with the 5th overdrive great top end. Just a thought.
