Can anybody tell me whether a 79 L48 has a 10" or 11" Flexplate and does the starter motor have offset bolt holes and long bolts. I am about to replace my starter motor and want to know whether an ordinary Chevy starter motor will fit. Thanks.
10" or 11" would be the diameter for the torque converter bolt pattern.
The flexplates GM lists is a 14" outside diameter with a dual torque converter pattern of 10.75"/11.50" 168 tooth unit
The other flexplate is a 12-3/4" outside diameter with a dual torque conv. pattern of 9.75"/10.75" 153 tooth unit.
You are going to have to look under the car and see if the 2 starter mounting bolts are straight across from each other. If they are, you have a 12-3/4" 153 tooth flexplate. 9.75"/10.75" (dual mounting pattern) for the T/C.
If the starter mounting bolts are staggered/offset then you have the larger 14" 168 tooth flexplate. 10.75"/11.50" (dual mounting pattern) for the T/C.
I believe that '79's had the bigger 14" flexplate, but you are going to have to physically look underneath and see how the starter bolts are positioned. Just to be on the safe side.
Good luck!
