Default Engine Removal w/4 spd

I've removed many engines with automatics, but never with a stick. If I was to just take out engine (I normal take out both) do I have to touch the linkage in anyway? Or can I just unbolt the 4 bolts on the tranny and pull the engine & Bell Housing together? I don't want to hurt the crank or input shaft...

1) Remove clutch linkage. That way, you won't damage it and it will give you more room.

2) Remove driveshaft, tranny mount and shifter.

3) Stock 4 speed tranny can be removed with crossmember in place.

4) Pull engine.

I have done it both ways. I usually install as unit since it is easier to align the tranny and bolt it up outside the car.

Pull the Z bar. It is one nut on the frame side, and a couple of clips.. you have to unbolt the other side from the block anyway..That'll give you 5 or 6 inches more wiggle room if you need it..

But
I"m not sure of some of that. The clutch cross shaft has to be removed its pivot is on the engine.

The tranny just pulls of the driveshaft, Its left behind like an auto.

Isn't the shifter buried above the tranny? I seem to remember only disconnecting the shift linkages and pulling the shifter after the tranny was out.

Except for the clutch its the same as pulling an auto isn't it?

I removed them with/without the tranny. Use a load leveler. When removing just the engine separate it as the bellhousing and remove just the block. Use a jack under the tranny and tie wire to the bellhousing for support.

Maybe you already know...

The stock shifter is not attached to the transmission. Only the linkages from the shifter are attached to the transmission. Detaching the linkages is pretty easy. The shifter is attached to a bracket that is in turn bolted to the crossmember. If you remove the engine/bellhousing/transmission as a single assembly, the shifter will remain in the car.

If you do remove the transmission, you should probably go back later and remove the shifter. It gets coated with grease, oil, and dirt. It's a good (I think) idea to remove the shifter and clean it up. If some of the parts are worn, Volunteer Vette sells replacement parts at pretty reasonable prices.
