Do you guys know of a kit made to up grade a 63 amp alternator to 100 amps? If so where can I find one or is it better and cheaper to buy a 100 amp?
thanks
alternators thru summit, ecklers, mid america, etc. are pretty reasonable these days. unless you've got time on your hands and just like to "tinker" with things, probably cheaper and easier just to get a new one. my .02
I'm pretty sure an alternator shop can rewind yours to make it have more output. There is a place a couple of miles from my house, and i don't think they charge much to do it.
It's sertainly possible to alter the original design a bit and get higher outputs, but problem is cooling in the final analysis...so anything more than say 30% is really pushing it...course this depends on car cooling too....in a vette that is minimal at best...
so the thing to do , IMO, is get what's known as a 17SI alternator....108 factory amps, mounts nearly identical, slightly larger diamter, plug in directly, they come in say '79 Seville with a/c and defogger....that's all you really need....
I"m sure there must be hotrod kits getting that up to 140 amps if you really running two fans/plus a/c...

Mine is a cheap chrome unit from a local parts store....when it needed rebuilding, the rebuilder just changed it to 94A at no cost to me. (additional)
I have dual elect fans on my car and A/C too. At a normal idle in gear at a light with A/C and fans on, the alternator keeps up nicely. If at night, and the lights are on too, the ammeter will show a slight 5A discharge until I bring engine speed up a little bit.
Just a thought here...but, are you planning on running a high power amp or something? 'Cause...I would suggest doing what I've done before...don't replace your alternator and run the system on your current wiring...you might run into problems.
I suggest getting one of the small batteries for running the car, and get a nice deep cycle battery and a second alternator for your auxilliary power. That way you can crank out some jams as long as you want until the battery dies and still be able to start your car and drive home...or even just charge your battery.
Also an important word of caution. If you are going to actually draw a constant 100AMPS through your alternator then make sure you use the appropriate size wire. I suggest going with 0 or 00 to reduce the risk of melting the insulation...4 guage or even 2 gauge is fine for a 100AMP peak, but not for a constant drain. It really doesn't cost that much more, and it is much much safer.
These guy sell on ebay as well and have a great feedback rating...
I have the 135 amp version. I also ran a fused 4 gauge wire from the alt to the starter solenoid to protect the stock wiring..... I got that kit for $20 from Summit...
