Took my 73 for the longest ride so far total of about 40 miles. Whe I got back I noticed my rear tire rims on both sides were really hot is this from the exhaust and is normal or is it something else and not normal. thanks.

How hot is hot? Do you have access to a temperature reading device (multi-meter).
You might check the 1973 A.I.M for exhaust clearance specifications. FYI in 1980 the muffler should be 0.40 inches from the spare tire carrier.
What kind of clearance do you have between the mufflers and the wheels?
Have you also checked other heat sources, like brakes and bearings, as potential problem sources?
I replaced all hoses brakes and rotors. My rear mufflers are about three quarters of an inch from my rear tires. I dont have a temp. meter but it gets pretty hot.
Sounds like you have a brake dragging or something. The rims should not be hot to the touch, they can be warm, but shouldn't be red hot to the touch. Maybe your brakes or emergency brakes are dragging.

Both emergency and rear brakes are all new. I dont here any scraping or dragging. But i could lift the car and check it out. They do get pretty hot on both sides though. The driver feels hotter than the passenger. It just seems weird though that both sides would drag doesn't it? Thats why I was thinking maybe the exhaust was heating things up.

I suggest checking your rear wheel bearings. I had a bad driver side wheel bearing which caused my d side rim to get hot and the other side was fine. I ended up replacing both rear wheel bearings as well as installing longer Moroso wheel studs.
