I'm a little confused about the right type for my 69 small block with stock 186 heads. Do I need self aligning without guide plate or non self aligning with guide plate.
Brand recomendations appreciated.
Thanks in advance
small block 69 used no guideplates, plain non-aligning rockers..I know, not too good, but the small push rod hole in the head is supposed to keep things square...lol
Don't know if you're interested but I have a set of Comp Cam Magnum roller tips with 3,000 miles on them in great shape. I'll be selling these at Carlisle or here. I just bought a new set for another job and they cost almost $150. Wish I had these before I bought the new ones.
"Guided Tip" rockers are for late model heads. The early engines do not need the guided tip rockers. I hope this clears the confusion rather than muck it up.

Check Summit Racing's roller rocker. Part number SUM-G6905 for 1.5 ratio rocker. Made by major cam manufacturer in Fla. for Summit. More then strong enough for most engines, good price, houstonvett

Respectfully, I disagree with some of the posts. On early heads, it does not matter if you are using slider/shoe type OE rockers because they have a relatively large contact patch ... BUT ... if you use roller tipped rockers on early heads you need to align them more closely to valve tips somehow ... More often than not, the hole in early head where pushrod passes through is not (alone) sufficient for use with Non self-aligning roller tip ... use self-aligning roller tips OR guide plates. Roller tips have a relatively small contact patch.

Absolutely, if you wish to use roller-tip or full rollers on non-guide plated heads, you will need to machine them for guideplates. It is my experience that the pushrod hole location in the head varies too much to be reliable unless you use the old style stamped steel rocker arm. Even then they don't like high rpm's or high valve spring pressures. (I have pulled a few studs out in my time...LOL)
If you go with guidplates, make sure you get hardened push rods!! If you use non-hardened one's the guidplates will wear them away until they bend. I know from experience .... my brother's first engine years ago did exactly that. Made alot of nice metal shavings too .
