This may be a basic question but what tools do I need to check the compression of my engine. Im doing my best and this forum as crossed mountains for me on my 73' 454. It was an original L-48 with 8.5:1 which is long gone. Yanked it and replaced it with the 454.
If you're taslking compression ratio, you need to know:
head chamber volume, piston installed heigth and head gasket compreseed thickness...along with bore size and stroke...
If you're talking about just cylinder compression, then there are compression gauges you screw in to the plug hole...no, you cannot get any reasonably close estimation of your Compression Ration, via cylinder compression test. (follow instruction dry/wet throttle WOT during test for accurate results)
Edit: You also need to know piston teyp (i/e valve reliefs, flatops, etc,. etc...)
