Default Tachometer cable replacement procedure?

My '69 needs a tach cable replacement (and probably also the seedometer cable while I'm in the neighborhood). Can I access these cables by removing just the instrument cluster...or does the whole dash need to come loose???

It's a VERY tight squeeze, but you can get to them without removing cluster. Each is attached to back of a gage with a springclip that you release tension with a finger/thumb while pulling back on cable. If you need more room you can LOOSEN just the driver side cluster ... first drop the column a bit ... then lay a rag on top of column to protect its paint.

Thanks Jack...if it's possible to get your hand up there without having to remove the dash, I'll give that a try. I think assuming the shape of a pretzel while snaking my hand up is probably half of the battle!

I don't know when it changed, but my '68 uses threaded connections at BOTH ends.

I changed both my cables this spring. and it's faster to drop the column and pull the DS gauge cluster out some than it is to try and get those damned threads lined up and find enough room back there to actually turn the nuts.

Good point CCG ... I dunno when they changed gages from threaded to springclips either. If the seat track bolts aren't frozen/siezed ... pulling seat out will ease your spine's pretzel bend.

Looked thru a coupla parts catalogs ... seems MY1968 tach gage and MY1968 tach cable are different (as are 68's speedo/speedo cable) ... seems threaded gage couplings are additional differences that sets first-year C3 apart ... seems the switch to springclips probably began with MY1969.

Guess I shouldn't have thrown out that old cable sheath. The drive cable was twisted in half, but the sheath was fine... Oh well.
