Default Oil Cooler Location

With all of the under hood heat a hi-po engine creates in a C3, I was thinking of putting a fan assisted oil cooler in the back below the gas tank, I removed the spare tire carrier long ago. Is this to far to run the oil lines?? Thoughts on hose or line type?? Would this aid engine operating temp? The fan would thermostatically controlled.

You might consider running a remote oil filter and put the cooler in front of the radiator.....unless you road-race, a cooler should not be necessary...IMO...

You can use a stock water-to-oil cooler from a C4.

I would think that out back is a long way to run oil lines. If it drains back, that is a long time to run the engine dry before it has pressure again.

I bet the distance to the front or back would be about the same on a vette. A fan assisted oil cooler plus the additional oil needed to fill it would probably help with temperature issues.

DeWitt sells a radiator with a built in engine oil cooler. In fact I think they now have one with both an engine and transmission oil cooler built in if you need it.

Many do run external coolers on their small block engines but most of them simply mount the cooler up front. There are lots of kits available that make this almost a routine bolt in operation. Unless I had a rear engine, I can't think of a good reason to run oil lines all the way to the rear just to put the cooler there.

I ran one on a BOSS-302 Mustang, but primarily to increase the oil capacity without changing oil pans. With dual remote filters and cooler up front I added a little under 3 quarts to the system.

Engine operating temp is about 210. DeRale has a fan assisted oil cooler in Summit for $100, Summits single filter relocate kit is $35, DeRale's Thermostat is $25, cost of lines & fittings added in say $200 -$225 total. Move the cooler out of the engine compartment and you aren't sending hot air over an already hot engine. Less expensive then DeWitts and get the benefits of an oil cooler to boot.
