Default 1970 wiper door problem-my first vette -please help

I just replaced my oil pressure gauge on my 1970 vette and now when I crank the car my wiper door opens up and stays open. It doesn't even close when I turn the car off. If I push it closed its opens back up as soon as I crank the car again. I don't think I reversed the plugs on my wiper switch- if that would even matter. What could be the problem, it was working fine before I went in and replaced my oil pressure guage. What did I mess up? Please help! Thank You! lennyv

Sounds like you have lost a vacum hose when you were removing or replacing the little oil pipe to the top of the back of the block. Check all your vacuum hoses in that area, there are a few!

Thinking about this again, maybe you knocked a vacuum hose off the vacuum switch underneath the dash, there is one either side of the steering column, one for wiper one for headlights

same thing happened on mine when I was working on the dash. That was the vacum hose on the switch under the dash ( to the right of tach on my car).

There is also the relay on the back of the drivers side lower dash panel that may have had a hose come off.

Before you tear a whole lot of vacuum hoses apart and crawl under the dash try this. On the passenger side under the right wiper blade is a vacuum safety switch. If the wiper blade doesn't go all of the way down this switch will prevent the door from closing. If the door is closed and the car is started it will open the door and keep it open until the wiper arm is all of the way down. This switch can be adjusted.

Give it a look see before you go to a lot of trouble. I know, it happened to me. Good luck!

With the engine running and car in neutral, park brake on use a stephoscope (about $5 at an auto shop) and listen under the dash. Probably a loose vaccum line. You can also use it under the hood also but it will be a little noisey.

The switch mentioned above can be a cause but watch you fingers as the wipers will not stop until they close on the switch and it hurts like hell when ity pinches your finger.

Good luck.
