Unlike a post from a few days ago, I am looking to make my 71' as quiet as possible while balancing the loss of horse power.
Is the stock system the best for that?
I have seen { muskgeon brake} chambered systems. are they quiet? , would it work to add a muffler to the end of the chambered system or is that too much loss of power.
FYI , I have done a complete frame off , added 73' rubber mounts, trying to make it a better ride for trips, thus the quieter the better.
I have ordered a new ZZ4 with upgrades that bring it to around 400hp and 410 torque, rebuilt the rear end with a 3.08 for milage.
So don't want to sacrifice the extra money I spent to get to 400 hp by strangling it.
I'm using Edelbrock RPMs with Summit Bullets as resonators. Both are stainless with perforated straight thru cores. Hi flow with acceptable sound level. An X crossover will also lower the dB while raising the pitch.

I have Dynomax Super Turbos in the 3 in. version, I thought they were the best compromise between power and noise, meaning they flow fairly good and I don't set my neighbours car alarm off backing out of my driveway anymore like I did with the Flowmaster 40"s
Thanks for the input.
No I'm not trying to be sneaky, just plan to drive this car, and want to be able to carry on a conversation while driving down the road,
My ZZ4 just arrived today, wasn't sopose to be here till next week.
Dynomax Super Turbos make no noise at all while at cruise but they can make a fair amount at WOT. Idle is slightly louder than stock. Send me a PM with your email address if you want some sound clips. Very tame but great flow too.
A ZZ4 deserves a set of Magnaflow or Dynomax Ultra-Flo mufflers. They are MORE than quiet enough for this application. I've got them on my Lincoln...and it still sounds like a family sedan, but with a little attitude. I can NOT hear the engine at cruise, but WOT is healthy-sounding instead of a pathetic "whoosh".
I've also got them on my 350-powered pickup and it behaves the same, decent idle note, quiet cruise, and loud WOT.
They really are a great muffler design for all-around driving...good sound, great performance.

Wait a minute...why would someone want a *quiet* exhaust system?? Sounds pretty suspicious to me!! (Just kidding).
The stock systems were fairly quiet, but were deeper and more "throaty" than typical cars of the day. Starting in about 1974, they started getting real quiet. This was about the same time you would see women driving Vettes, and Vettes with air conditioning, automatics, and stereos (all the sissy stuff).
Z-man,
Call me a sissy then, cause I would like to hear my stereo over the engine at cruising speeds. { nice car you have, what kind of wheels are they? } and I do have A/C.

I can hear my 4 barrels open up for the first time with the Super turbos and I like to hear the stereo, nice change over what I am used too and I can candy cotton the 295's at 50 miles an hour if I feel in the mood
I don't understand. I can have a normal conversation with my wife at 70 MPH on a trip and I am currently running flow master 40's. In fact I was so impressed with a friend's side pipes and their wonderful sound, I will make that my next mod. And you can have a conversation with them at cruising speeds too. The good flowing exhausts are only loud when your toes are tickling the air cleaner.

For stock 200HP motor you can run open headers and no one will notice, big difference in sound level when you start running 3 inch exhaust and have 550 to 600 HP under the hood. People would stop 20 feet hehind me at a red light when I had the 40's on mine
