I am having problems with the idle on my 82. It runs good when its cold, then when it warms up occasionally it will start to idle down to below 500RPM. Sometimes it will die if you let it continue. It will go from 750 to 500 cycling back and forth at 1 second intervals. I checked the IAC's and they were at 60 and 70 ohms. Anyone have this problem and what should I do next. Thanks
Cross-fires are sensitive to vacuum leaks. 1 place they all eventually leak is at the intale plenum gasket adjacent to the EGR valve. Also, I have found the IAC motors get weak when they age. Check the fuel pressure if you can (hot). Try those 2 items first.
the cycling is the IACs, hook up a scanner..your IAC# (position) will probably be very high (10-22 or so is normal) which means it's trying to up the idle speed and then going back to a more normal position. You may have to adjust the minimum air, it could be that the idle stops have worn toi the point where the throttle blades close too far.
The IAC's are stepper motors, measuring the resistance on them is no sure proof that they work but they rarely ever fail, they can get gummed up, check the pintle and the hole and maybe spray some brake cleaner in there (the kidney shaped hole) do not push or pull the pintle, as said it's a stepper motor, not a linear actuator.
My 82 is doing the same things and I just found cracks on the manifold upper plate vacuum port. The plate is at a welding shop now and hopefully will be better soon.
