Default Cam Lobe Wiped

I installed a xe-262 Comp Cam in my 77 vette around 4 years ago. I haven't put on a great deal of mileage and now #7exh lope is wiped. Has anyone had a problem with Comp Cams? What new cam would you recommend. It'a a 77 L-48 with performer intake and QJ, 4 speed. When I installed it, I bought the kit: cam, lifters and springs. The engine ran smooth until the lope wiped.
Thanks

What are signs of a wiped lobe cam? Is it obvious to detect?

I installed one about 500 miles ago, and it runs like crap.

if you pull the valve covers and the rocker arms aren't going up and down you have a problem.

The engine was popping through the carb and #7 exhaust rocker arm was not opening and closing

That made the old sphincter tighten up! I just installed the exact same cam this past spring! I've been drivin' it all summer. So far so good....

I can't speak more than this experience so far:

* XE268H wiped during break-in #8 exh, first 30 minutes of run time and yes, I followed the procedure
* Worked with Summit and they replaced it with a Lunati with no trouble
* I would be able to tell you how it went except an electrical problem popped up and I couldn't start the car, hope to tomorrow now that I found that and will report on the results

I just lost all confidence in Comp right now. If you have a cam and are good, you're probably ok. But they seem to have quality control issues with the match between cam and lifter IMHO. Somone mentioned crown spec issues a couple weeks back and that sounds believable to me.

I'm glad you said it and not me! From what I know about and heard about these cams there is a risk in using them. Let me rephrase that. I have no experience with them but have heard plenty of the wiped lobe threads. The cam is highly aggressive in the ramp. Most people do not have a problem with them. Some may not break them in properly and others may have other issues that lead to premature wear. When things go all right, one could expect to get a few more ponies versus a more conventional cam with less aggressive ramps. There was a recent poll on the forum and the results were in my opinion not the good. Using one of these performance cams is taking a higher risk. That does not mean everyone will fail, nor does it mean that a majority will fail. It means that cam failure will occurr more frequently than most other cams.

Aggressive ramps never seem to last too long on street cams for some reason. I suffered a few broken dampners too after 300 miles(yes, the springs were set up right). That's unacceptable IMO-Comp 284 XE

But nobody seems to be worried untill after the lobes get round. OH WELL!

All the Biggies have an aggressive cam line but you don't hear about Crane, Lunati, Isky failures. Either no one buys them or Comp has a specific problem. Also, reading the latest article from Vizard in Popular Hot Rodding and he mentioned about testing some hydraulic roller cams back in the early '90s and the fact the results were poor so they did NOT write the article. That disappointed me to read that. In other words, they write the good news and nothing on the bad. That's not journalism, that's called being a shill.

A shout in the distance says... "go roller my man...go roller..."

Money is definitely an issue to convert though, but what a piece of mind.

I guess your humor button is turned off.

BTW, roller does allow quicker ramps, better torque cures, etc, all with a "small" profile that aids in drivability through out the RPM range.

Besides, it's just cool to say.."I have a roller cam in there"

Well that does it. The XE262 on the bench sho nuff AIN'T goin' in my car. I'll go back and find yet another one.....
Anybody wanna buy a still-in-the-box XE cam? I'll make you a good deal! (No, I couldn't sell it to anyone here: first, nobody here would buy it anyway, but I wouldn't be able to show my face here anymore either. Guess I'll throw it out in the back yard, let the roses grow on it and call it a "sculpture.")
