Is there anyway to ID this rod? It's supposed to be the original '75 L-82 rod. I thought they used the pink rods but there is no paint on them or an "X" on the cap?
Thanks
Gary
All Gen I smallblock rods were 1010 steel. The pink rods were off the shelf rods that were magged and shotpeened. That rod does not look like it was peened, at least from the photo.
Ok guys here's another related question. The pink rods had an "X" in the caps. The picture I posted is a plain old cap. Is there any way a Pink Rod would use the plain caps? I think not but I would like to hear from you.
Thanks
Gary
PS I'll explain all this later on and it will make more sense then.
Hey Tom,
Nope in this case the caps were not ground in the cast area. You can that in the first picture. It would have been obvious if they were. I do believe I was swindled out of a set of rods and given a lesser quality rod in their place.
Gary
it's definitely not an X rod, you can see that by looking at the thrust side on the main cap, yours is round, the X-rods has the sort of D shape like on the main beam.
BTW, the X is not placed on the balancing pad, it's between it and the bolt. Machining will not remove the X.
Thanks TT, I'm not sure where you referenced the "D" shape though? It's clear enough for me to see the difference in my pictures, as it should be for a Judge when the time arrives. I overpaid for this service and got ripped off on top of it. My next call is to the police to see about filing a complaint of stolen parts.
I wonder how many others were ripped off by this shop and their lousy work. If I built the engine the way it was returned it would have failed for sure and the shop could have walked because it was assembled by me and used in a "race car"! Always check dimensions before installing a new part, unless you want to do it again.
Look at the shape of the machined side of the big end and cap. You'll see the outline is not round but sort of rounded square shaped, your cap has a round shape.
Here's what I mean, the green arrows point at the "bulges"...the X rod has 4, 2 on the beam and 2 on the cap, yours has 2..only on the beam none on the cap
look at the rod from the side and see how much "meat" is around the rod bolt, some rods look real big but have no "meat" around the bolt, these are very weak, you see them alot. how much compression do you plan on???
You're referring to the rods I got back, right? They were going to be used in a 355 w 10.5 CR solid 510 lift cam, aluminum heads, and RPM intake. Shifting to 6000-6,500 RPMS. I don't plan on using them in that application.
